The Questions You Should Be Asking Your Insurance Agent (And Probably Aren't)

Most people treat their insurance agent like a vending machine. You put in a request, a policy comes out, and the relationship basically ends there until renewal time. No follow-up questions. No real conversation about whether the coverage actually fits your life.

Here's the thing: a good agent wants more questions, not fewer. The people who ask the most usually end up with the coverage that actually works for them, not just the coverage that got sold to them.

If you've never really thought about what to ask, here's where to start.

"What Am I Actually Not Covered For?"

Most people know the basics of what their policy covers. Almost nobody asks about the gaps. Every policy has exclusions, situations, conditions, or specifics that fall outside what's covered, and those gaps are exactly the kind of thing you want to know about before you need them, not after.

Asking this one question upfront can save you from a very unpleasant surprise down the road.

"Why This Plan, Specifically, for Me?"

There's a difference between a plan that's popular and a plan that's right for your specific situation. A good agent should be able to explain, in plain language, why a particular option makes sense for your income, your family, your health, or your business, not just recite the plan's features.

If the answer feels generic, that's worth noticing.

"What Changes Every Year, and When Should I Expect to Hear About It?"

Insurance isn't a "set it and forget it" purchase. Costs shift. Coverage details update. Networks change. A good agent should be able to tell you, roughly, what to expect to change annually and when you'll typically be notified, so you're not caught off guard by a renewal notice that looks nothing like last year's.

"What Would You Ask, If You Were Me?"

This one tends to get the most honest answers. It takes the pressure off the transactional version of the conversation and invites the agent to actually think about your specific situation instead of running through a script.

"What Happens If I Need to File a Claim? Walk Me Through It."

Nobody wants to think about needing to file a claim. But understanding the actual process, not just in theory, but the real steps, the real timeline, the real paperwork, means you're not learning it for the first time during a stressful moment.

The Bigger Point

None of these questions are meant to make anyone feel behind or unprepared. Most people have never been shown that these are even questions worth asking. That's not a personal failing. That's just a gap in how insurance gets explained to people in the first place. Isenhour Insurance is passionate about helping people make informed decisions about their insurance.
